History

Boa Vista, the capital of the state of Roraima, was founded in 1830, but it only gained recognition as a town in 1890, under the name Boa Vista do Rio Branco. The city was designed in a radial layout, inspired by the ideas of the French architect L’Enfant, who planned the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C. This unique urban design makes Boa Vista the only planned capital in northern Brazil. The city’s growth accelerated with the construction of the BR-174 highway, connecting it to Manaus and later to Venezuela. Today, Boa Vista is a significant cultural, political, and economic hub in Roraima, preserving historical buildings alongside modern structures and urban spaces.

Culture

Boa Vista embodies the cultural diversity of Roraima, blending Indigenous, Northeastern Brazilian, and Caribbean influences. The city celebrates its rich heritage through festivals, gastronomy, and crafts. Traditional dances such as forró and marabaixo coexist with Indigenous expressions like the parixara.

Things to Do

Explore Anauá Park, one of the largest parks in the region, perfect for walks and outdoor activities. Visit the historic centre, featuring landmarks such as the Nenê Macaggi Palace of Culture. Along the banks of the Rio Branco, enjoy stunning views at the Rio Branco Park Complex, especially at sunset.

Tourist Attractions

The Monument to the Prospectors pays tribute to the region's economic history. Orla Taumanan is a lively space for enjoying local cuisine and cultural events. Don't miss the Cristo Redentor Cathedral, whose modern architecture stands out on the city's skyline.

Festival Calendar, Events and Holidays

In June, Boa Vista comes alive with vibrant June Festivities. The Canta Roraima Music Festival, usually held in November, showcases local artists. The city's anniversary, on 9 July, features civic and cultural events throughout the week.

Weather

Boa Vista enjoys a tropical climate, with average annual temperatures ranging from 24°C to 33°C. The dry season runs from October to March, while the rainy season occurs from April to September. The dry season, with its sunny days, is the ideal time to visit.

How to Get There

Boa Vista is served by the Atlas Brasil Cantanhede International Airport, offering direct flights from Manaus and Brasília, as well as some international connections. Travellers from Europe typically arrive via major Brazilian hubs. The BR-174 highway links Boa Vista to Venezuela and the rest of Brazil.
