History

Caseara, located in the western region of Tocantins state, traces its origins to the settlement along the Araguaia River, one of the largest and most significant waterways in the area. Officially founded on 14 November 1963, the town emerged from an old farm that attracted settlers due to its fertile soil and proximity to the river, vital for transportation and subsistence. Over the years, the village evolved into a strategic hub for natural resource exploration and agricultural and fishing development. The establishment of Cantão State Park in 1998 solidified Caseara’s role as a centre for environmental conservation, fostering harmony between human progress and the preservation of the region’s rich biodiversity.

Culture

Caseara's culture is deeply rooted in riverside and indigenous traditions. Religious festivals, such as the celebration of Our Lady of Aparecida, the local patroness, showcase community devotion. The local cuisine features typical Cerrado dishes, with ingredients like Araguaia fish and native fruits. Handicrafts made from straw and wood reflect the creativity and connection to nature.

Things to Do

Explore the incredible Cantão State Park, a protected area with over 800 interconnected lakes, where the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pantanal biomes converge. Sport fishing and boat trips on the Araguaia River are must-do activities. Visiting the freshwater beaches that emerge during the dry season is also highly recommended for relaxation.

Tourist Attractions

Cantão State Park is the main attraction, an ecological paradise for bird and wildlife observation. The Araguaia Beaches offer leisure opportunities between July and September. Don't miss the Caseara Port, a departure point for river excursions and crossings, as well as the town centre, where local traditions remain vibrant.

Festival Calendar, Events and Holidays

Caseara annually celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Aparecida in October with processions and religious events. In July, the beach season draws visitors to enjoy the warm weather and Araguaia waters. Another highlight is the Sport Fishing Festival, held in the early second half of the year, combining sportsmanship with environmental awareness.

Weather

Caseara has a tropical climate with well-defined seasons. From May to September, the dry season offers pleasant temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 30 °C. From October to April, the rainy season prevails, enhancing the beauty of rivers and lakes, though the heat can exceed 35 °C.

How to Get There

Caseara is about 260 km from Palmas, the capital of Tocantins. For international visitors, flying to Palmas and renting a car or taking a bus to the city is possible. The main access route is the TO-080, providing a scenic drive through Cerrado landscapes. Alternatively, you can arrive via the Araguaia River from regional ports.
