History

Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, located in the state of Goiás, was established in 1961 and is one of the most important conservation areas of the Brazilian Cerrado. Its creation was driven by the need to protect the region’s rich biodiversity, especially in the face of agricultural expansion and uncontrolled deforestation threatening local flora and fauna. Chapada dos Veadeiros is an area of great ecological and geological value, known for its ancient rock formations, over 1.8 billion years old, as well as its canyons, waterfalls, and stunning trails. Currently managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the park covers an area of 240,000 hectares, offering opportunities for ecotourism and outdoor activities. Chapada dos Veadeiros is also recognised as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site due to its importance in preserving the Cerrado ecosystems, one of the most biodiverse and endangered biomes in Brazil.

Importance

Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park plays a crucial role in preserving the Cerrado biome, considered one of the most biodiverse in the world but also one of the most threatened. It protects numerous endemic and endangered plant and animal species, such as the maned wolf, giant anteater, and jaguar. Additionally, the park serves as an important water reservoir, with springs that feed into major river basins in Brazil. Chapada dos Veadeiros also contributes to the sustainable development of the region by promoting ecotourism as a viable economic alternative for local communities and serving as a hub for scientific research and environmental conservation.

Tickets

Admission to Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is approximately R$ 18.00 for Brazilians and R$ 36.00 for foreigners. Access to the park is controlled and limited to a specific number of visitors per day to ensure environmental preservation. Tickets can be purchased directly at the park or preferably online to avoid queues and secure a spot, especially during the high season. Hiring local guides is recommended to explore trails and more remote areas of the park, ensuring safety and enriching the experience with information about the region's fauna, flora, and history. Some areas may have restricted access depending on weather conditions and preservation efforts.

Guidelines

Wear light clothing and comfortable shoes, ideal for long hikes and uneven terrain. Sunscreen, a hat or cap, and insect repellent are essential due to the exposure to the sun and Cerrado vegetation. Stay hydrated by carrying enough water for your hikes, along with light snacks such as fruits and cereal bars. Follow the signage and adhere to the guidelines provided by park guides and staff. Always stay on designated trails to avoid damaging vegetation and soil. Do not feed the animals and maintain a safe distance from the local fauna to ensure both your safety and that of the wildlife. Carry back all waste you produce and use the available bins to keep the park clean and preserved.

When to Go

The best time to visit Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is during the dry season, from May to September. During this period, the trails are more accessible, and the waterfalls maintain a pleasant water flow, offering a safe and enjoyable experience. During the rainy season, from October to April, the park can become more challenging for hiking, with slippery trails and an increased risk of flash floods. However, this is the best time to see the waterfalls at their peak volume. Each season offers a different experience, but planning is essential to ensure a safe and smooth visit.

How to Get There

For travellers coming from Europe, the most convenient entry point is Brasília International Airport (BSB). From Brasília, the park is located approximately 230 km away and can be reached by road, with the journey taking around 3 to 4 hours by car. The main gateway to the park is the town of Alto Paraíso de Goiás, where there are several accommodation options and tour agencies offering transport and guided tours to the park’s trails and waterfalls. Car rental in Brasília is also a popular option for those who prefer to explore the region independently.
