History

The Tamoios Environmental Protection Area (APA), located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, was established in 1982 with the aim of protecting one of Brazil’s richest and most diverse coastal ecosystems. The APA covers parts of the coast of Rio de Janeiro, including islands, mangroves, and a vast marine area vital for biodiversity conservation. The foundation of the Tamoios APA was driven by growing urbanisation and the unrestrained exploitation of the region’s natural resources, threatening fragile habitats and endemic species. Since its creation, the APA has played a crucial role in preserving marine and terrestrial ecosystems, ensuring that economic activities such as tourism and fishing are conducted sustainably. The park is managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), which works in collaboration with local communities and environmental organisations to ensure that natural resources are used in a balanced manner. Today, the Tamoios APA actively promotes ecotourism and environmental education, offering visitors the opportunity to explore its stunning landscapes and learn about the importance of environmental conservation.

Importance

The Tamoios APA is one of the most significant examples of conservation in Brazil, protecting marine and terrestrial habitats vital for biodiversity. The area preserves coral reefs, mangroves, and tropical forests and serves as a sanctuary for endangered species such as the grey dolphin and several species of sea turtles. For local communities, the APA provides a sustainable source of income through ecotourism, promoting economic development without compromising the environment. This balance between preservation and sustainable use is crucial for maintaining the ecological integrity of the region and ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from these natural resources.

Tickets

The Tamoios APA is a public conservation area, and most activities within the area do not require an entrance fee. However, some islands and specific attractions, such as guided trails or boat tours, may have associated fees, which vary depending on the tour operator. Visitors are encouraged to book activities in advance, especially during the high season. Access to more sensitive conservation areas may require the presence of licensed guides, with prices adjusted according to the chosen activity. The main recommendation is to plan your visit according to the type of experience you desire, to make the most of your contact with nature.

Guidelines

To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to the Tamoios APA, it is recommended to wear light and comfortable clothing, as well as appropriate footwear for trails and boat trips. Sunscreen, a hat or cap, and insect repellent are essential to protect against natural elements. Bring enough water to stay hydrated and light snacks such as fruit and cereal bars. Follow all signage and instructions from guides, and avoid straying from designated trails, minimising your environmental impact. It is important not to feed the animals, to keep your distance from wildlife, and to always collect your litter, using available bins or taking it back with you. Contribute to the conservation of the site by respecting the preservation rules, which prohibit the removal of any natural or historical materials.

When to Go

The Tamoios APA can be visited year-round, but weather conditions vary by season. From December to March, the summer brings high temperatures and sunny days, ideal for water activities. However, heavier rains can occur, especially at the end of the summer. The drier season, from April to November, offers milder temperatures and calm waters, perfect for trails and marine wildlife observation. Spring and autumn are considered the best times to visit, with more stable weather and fewer tourists, allowing for a quieter and more immersive experience.

How to Get There

To reach the Tamoios APA from Europe, the best option is to fly to Galeão International Airport (GIG) in Rio de Janeiro. From there, travel by car or bus to the town of Angra dos Reis, located about 150 km from Rio de Janeiro. From Angra, boats and speedboats depart for various islands within the APA, such as Ilha Grande and Gipóia Island. There are also tourism companies offering transfers and packages that facilitate access to the park. The journey combines land and sea travel, providing an exciting arrival at the destination.
