History

The Monte Roraima National Park was established in 1989 and is located at the tri-border region between Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana, in the far north of Roraima state. Its history is deeply intertwined with Indigenous culture, being considered sacred by the Pemón, Ingarikó, and Macuxi peoples, who have inhabited the region for centuries. Mount Roraima is one of the oldest tepuis on the planet, dating back approximately 2 billion years, granting it significant importance in Earth’s geological history. Furthermore, the region gained global recognition thanks to scientific expeditions and literary inspiration, such as Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Lost World, inspired by the mountain’s unique and mysterious landscape. The park was created to preserve the region’s unique biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Importance

The Monte Roraima National Park is one of the most iconic locations in the Amazon and South America. It protects a unique ecosystem, with flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth. The park also holds immense cultural value as a sacred site for Indigenous peoples. Additionally, its remote location and dramatic landscapes attract scientists and adventurers, promoting sustainable tourism. Conservation of the park is vital to preserving its biodiversity and Indigenous ancestral knowledge.

Tickets

Entry to Monte Roraima National Park is regulated, requiring authorisation from ICMBio and the accompaniment of accredited guides. Ticket prices vary depending on the chosen activity, with expeditions to the mountain's summit being the most popular. It’s essential to check costs in advance, as these may include extra fees for camping and guide services. Tour packages often cover transport, meals, and logistics, making planning easier. Reservations should be made in advance, especially during the high season, to ensure availability and avoid inconvenience.

Guidelines

The park is located in a remote area and requires both physical and logistical preparation for visits. Comfortable, durable clothing, suitable trekking footwear, and camping gear are essential. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so being prepared for rain and wind is crucial. Do not leave waste behind, respect conservation rules, and always follow the guidance of local guides. Additionally, due to the altitude and physical demands, staying hydrated and listening to your body’s limits are vital.

When to Go

The best time to visit Monte Roraima National Park is from December to March, during the dry season, when trails are more accessible and rainfall is minimal. During this period, the views are more breathtaking, with fewer clouds. In the rainy season, from April to November, access may be more challenging, but the waterfalls become more powerful, creating even more stunning landscapes. Plan your trip according to your preferences and the expected weather conditions.

How to Get There

Access to the park begins in Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, about 200 km from the Venezuelan border. Regular flights connect Boa Vista with major Brazilian cities. From there, a car journey is needed to reach the village of Santa Elena de Uairén in Venezuela, and then to the trailhead. Many visitors opt for packages that include ground transportation and guides to simplify the journey. For European tourists, international flights to Manaus with connections to Boa Vista are the most viable options.
