History

The Encontro das Águas State Park, established in 2004, is located in the heart of the Pantanal wetlands of Mato Grosso, recognised as the largest continuous flooded area on the planet. Spanning approximately 108,000 hectares, the park safeguards riverine and terrestrial ecosystems as well as unique biodiversity. Its creation aimed to protect the confluence of the Cuiabá and São Lourenço rivers, which are not only ecologically significant but also serve as crucial habitats for a variety of flora and fauna. Known as a sanctuary for jaguars, the park also holds a history intertwined with local communities who live in harmony with the biome, practising sustainable activities. Today, it is one of the top ecotourism destinations in the Pantanal, drawing researchers and tourists from around the world.

Importance

The park is one of the world's most critical biodiversity refuges, especially for the jaguar, a symbol of the Pantanal. It protects unique ecosystems, regulates water cycles, and ensures the survival of threatened species. Furthermore, it is vital for the riverside communities, which benefit from environmental preservation to sustain their economic activities. The park plays a key role in conserving the Pantanal, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.

Tickets

Access to the Encontro das Águas State Park is primarily through tours organised by authorised travel agencies, which include preservation fees in the ticket price. Costs vary depending on the itinerary, ranging from R$150 to R$300 per person, based on the duration and activities offered, such as boat tours and safaris. Advance booking is recommended, especially during the high season, to ensure availability and the best experience.

Guidelines

Prepare for a tropical climate with light clothing, comfortable footwear, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Cameras with long lenses are ideal for capturing wildlife. Respect conservation rules and never feed the animals. Specialised guides are indispensable for a safe and enriching visit. Stay hydrated and opt for tour packages that follow sustainable, low-impact practices.

When to Go

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from July to October, when lower river levels make animal sightings, particularly jaguars, more frequent. During the rainy season, from November to March, the landscapes become lush but access is more limited. Plan your trip based on the type of experience you desire.

How to Get There

The park is located about 145 km from Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso. From Cuiabá, follow the Transpantaneira to Porto Jofre, the main entry point. For international visitors, direct flights to Cuiabá are recommended, with frequent connections from São Paulo. From Porto Jofre, access is via boats organised by tour operators. Hire a specialised agency for logistics and safety.
