History

Located in the state of Ceará, the Jericoacoara National Park was established in 2002 to protect a unique ecosystem and preserve local biodiversity. Before its creation, the area was home to traditional fishing communities, whose culture remains an important hallmark of the region. With the establishment of the park, conservation measures were introduced to safeguard its rich flora and fauna, as well as the famous shifting sand dunes and crystal-clear lagoons. Historically, Jericoacoara gained prominence as a tourist destination in the 1980s, attracting visitors seeking natural beauty and tranquillity. Today, the park is managed by ICMBio and is considered a model of sustainable tourism in Brazil.

Moreover, the park promotes sustainable tourism, generating income for local communities while protecting natural resources. Culturally, it serves as a space where regional traditions meet visitors from around the globe, fostering an enriching exchange.

Tickets

Access to Jericoacoara National Park is free, but visitors must pay an environmental fee to enter the village of Jericoacoara, which contributes to local maintenance and sustainability. The current fee is R$41 and must be paid in advance or upon arrival. Local guides can be hired, especially for trails and guided tours, ensuring safety and a more complete experience. To make the most of your visit, book activities in advance, especially during the high season.

Guidelines

The park enforces strict rules for environmental preservation. Camping, campfires, and littering are prohibited in protected areas. Trails must be followed on marked paths, and vehicles are only permitted in designated areas. It is recommended to use biodegradable sunscreen and lightweight clothing. Bring water but avoid disposable containers. Respect local communities and wildlife, refraining from feeding animals or disturbing their habitat. Always follow the guidance of local guides or informational signs.

When to Go

Jericoacoara National Park is a year-round destination, but the experience varies depending on the season. The dry season, from July to December, is perfect for sunny days and full lagoons, ideal for relaxation. From January to June, rainfall is more frequent, adding a special charm to the landscape by replenishing the lagoons. During holidays and peak season, the destination can become crowded. For a more tranquil experience, opt for off-peak months like May or September.

How to Get There

Jericoacoara is approximately 300 km from Fortaleza, which has an international airport with flights from Europe and other continents. From Fortaleza, direct flights are available to Jericoacoara Regional Airport in Cruz, 30 km from the park. From there, transfers or 4x4 vehicles take visitors to the village. Alternatively, the journey can be made by road via transfers or buses departing from Fortaleza. For a more authentic experience, opt for adapted vehicles to cross the dunes.
