Serra dos Órgãos National Park: Trails, Waterfalls, and Stunning Landscapes in Brazil

History

Created in 1939, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO) is Brazil’s third-oldest national park, established to protect the natural beauty of the Serra do Mar and its rich biodiversity. Located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the park spans parts of the municipalities of Teresópolis, Petrópolis, Magé, and Guapimirim. Its name is inspired by the mountain range, which resembles the pipes of church organs. Since its foundation, PARNASO has become a vital hub for environmental conservation, ecotourism, and scientific research, preserving areas of Atlantic Forest that are home to endemic and endangered species. Throughout its history, the park has been the site of numerous environmental education initiatives and is renowned for its challenging trails and breathtaking landscapes, attracting visitors from around the world.

Importance

PARNASO is one of Brazil's most significant Atlantic Forest refuges, protecting over 20,000 hectares of flora and fauna. The park plays a crucial role in climate regulation and preserving springs that supply the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, its rich biodiversity is a treasure for researchers, and its ecotourism infrastructure raises environmental awareness among visitors.

Tickets

Ticket prices vary depending on the attractions visited, with discounts available for Brazilians and visitors from Mercosur countries. Basic entry costs around R$30, while the Petrópolis-Teresópolis Crossing has specific fees. Students, teachers, and seniors are entitled to half-price tickets. Payments can be made online or at visitors' centres. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, especially during the high season.

Guidelines

To make the most of your visit, wear comfortable clothing, bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Some trails require good physical preparation, so it is essential to check the difficulty level beforehand. Certified guides are recommended for routes like the Petrópolis-Teresópolis Crossing. Follow environmental rules, avoid littering, and help protect wildlife.

When to Go

The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from May to September during the dry season, ideal for hiking and panoramic views. In summer, between December and March, rainfall is more frequent, increasing the waterfalls' flow but making trails slippery. Start your hikes early to avoid intense heat.

How to Get There

PARNASO has main entrances in Teresópolis, Petrópolis, and Guapimirim, all less than 100 km from Rio de Janeiro. Travellers from Europe can fly into Galeão International Airport (GIG) or Santos Dumont Airport (SDU). From there, you can rent a car or take a bus to the base cities. Roads like BR-116 and BR-040 provide easy access to the park's gates.
