History

Tijuca National Park, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, was established in 1961 to preserve one of the largest urban forests in the world. Its history dates back to the 19th century when the area was heavily deforested to make way for coffee plantations, resulting in environmental degradation and water shortages in local watersheds. In response to this crisis, Emperor Dom Pedro II ordered the reforestation of the region in 1861, under the supervision of Major Archer, marking the beginning of one of Brazil’s first environmental recovery initiatives. The replanted area transformed into a vast Atlantic Forest refuge within the city, providing an oasis of nature amidst growing urbanisation. Today, Tijuca National Park is managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and hosts trails, waterfalls, iconic landmarks, and rich biodiversity. It is one of Brazil’s top ecotourism destinations, offering visitors a unique experience that combines nature, history, and culture.

Importance

Tijuca National Park is crucial for preserving the Atlantic Forest and biodiversity in one of Brazil’s most urbanised areas. It protects native and endangered species such as the golden lion tamarin and various birds and mammals. In addition to its ecological importance, the park plays a key role in climate regulation and water supply for Rio de Janeiro. The park is also a cultural heritage site, home to historical monuments and a place where nature and city history converge. Sustainable tourism in the park generates jobs and promotes environmental awareness, benefiting the local economy and surrounding communities.

Tickets

Most areas of Tijuca National Park are free to access, including trails, waterfalls, and viewpoints. However, specific attractions such as Christ the Redeemer and parking at some locations may have associated fees. Tickets to Christ the Redeemer cost around R$ 46.00 for adults, with reduced prices for children and seniors. It is recommended to purchase tickets online in advance to avoid queues, especially during peak season. Tour guides can be hired for those wishing to explore lesser-known trails or learn more about the flora, fauna, and history of the region. Some trails require moderate physical fitness, so following the recommendations is important for a safe visit.

Guidelines

To make the most of your visit to Tijuca National Park, wear light clothing and comfortable shoes suitable for hiking. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat or cap, and insect repellent, as the wooded areas may have mosquitoes. Stay hydrated by carrying enough water for your hike, along with light snacks such as fruits and cereal bars. Respect all signs and follow the guidance of park staff and guides, staying on designated trails to avoid damaging vegetation and wildlife. Avoid feeding the animals, as this can alter their natural behaviour. Take all your litter with you and use the provided bins. Everyone has a responsibility to preserve the park, so please respect conservation rules and avoid removing any natural or historical materials.

When to Go

Tijuca National Park can be visited year-round, but the best time to visit is between May and September, during the dry season when the trails are more accessible and temperatures are mild. During the summer months, from December to March, rain is more frequent, making some trails slippery and increasing the risk of waterfalls and flash floods. However, summer also brings greener, lusher vegetation, ideal for those seeking closer contact with tropical nature. Rio de Janeiro's climate is generally warm, so be prepared for the weather conditions when planning your visit.

How to Get There

For visitors from Europe, the main entry point is Rio de Janeiro's Galeão International Airport (GIG). Tijuca National Park is located within the city and can be accessed by car, taxi, or public transport. The park's main entrance is about a 30-minute drive from the city centre, and there are several secondary entrances providing access to different areas of the park. For those wishing to visit Christ the Redeemer, official vans depart from tourist spots in the city such as Largo do Machado and Barra da Tijuca. The park is well-signposted and offers basic infrastructure for visitors.
